Highland sparked the Dunan Unification War by attacking their own Unicorn Brigade, a sudden attack which killed almost the entire trainee soldiers except Riou and Jowy which later become the leader of City State and Highland respectively.
Successful in awaking the Highlanders' rage through the attack which was blamed to the City State, Luca Blight, the commander of Highland First Troop and the first in line of the Highland's throne, massacred the village of Ryube which was located at the border between the two countries. Moving on, he invaded Mercenary Fortress where Viktor and Flik resided. Toto village was the next target of the raiding Highland soldiers.
At that point of time, Riou, Jowy and Riou's sister, Nanami have already fled to Muse. Riou and Jowy continued to work for City States instead and during one of their missions to spy on Highland's food supply, Jowy was forced to sacrifice himself in order to help Riou escaped. the two friends were separated ever since.
gensoSuikoden II tells the story in Riou's perspective. After that incident, Jowy came back, only to betray the City States by murdering Lady Annabelle, the mayor of Muse and acting-leader of City States. City States lost their capital and forced to retreat. Riou made it to be the iconic leader for City States and managed to get the entire Dunan to join forces against Highland. They managed to defeat Luca Blight with the aid of Jowy who was already a high rank officer. Jowy then took over the crown by asking Jillia Blight, the late-king's only daughter in hand of marriage. AT this point of time, it is already a war between two friends.
There were times when Riou and Jowy met in battlefield, but both were determined to win by not wanting to retreat.
As I played the game, it was clear that Jowy was the power-thirst bastard, the betrayer, the cold-blooded killer. However, if I see it from Jowy's perspective, he is just like Elpahaba. Sacrificing himself, to end the war.
back to where Jowy was caught, Luca offered him a position in the Highland army if he could help him in getting Annabelle's head. He did and Luca gave him what he promised. Jowy had his own plan, and the only person who understood him was Leon Silverberg, who aided him til the end. HAving the aim of destroying the power of the Beast Rune, he ruled Riou's army to L'Renouille, the Highland castle and also the palace where the Beast Rune resided.
Jowy was not a person whom players supposed to hate and dislike, but he was the key figure for Dunan's victory. Everyone was rejoiced because he lost, he 'died'.
Another case of unfairness and self sacrificial whom was kept underneath the truth and remained unappreciated.
It came to my mind as I was looking at the suikoden card case which i bought from Tokyo. Jowy was among the characters shown in the cover. He looked so ... different. So naive and innocent. He smiled.
Life's tough isnt it ?
i think, he is in my favourite characters list ..
