a lady emailed me a few days ago about the article in Craftholic and she wanted me to teach her some flowers foldings. Met her today and it was rather enriching, even for me. Hahhaa. Actually realized a few techniques and types of foldings while teaching her. Moreover, she was an architect, and she paints !!!! Hehhee. Can ask her for questions for my paintings :):):)
Was browsing through C-ART magazine and was thinking who are the artists that have inspired me so far.
From Singapore, Tang Da Wu, Amanda Heng, Donna Ong, Mutmainnah binte Saidi. The first three are more like artists whom I admired ? Hahaha. For Saidi, her works are pretty much influence my current works, filled with colours and arrangement. Saw her works at Esplanade once then again at a gallery near my place. As usual, her works still amaze me ...
From Japan, Yayoi Kusama and Satoshi Uchiumi. Saw Uchiumi's works when I was in Tokyo last month. Saw them twice, once at MOT and another at a small gallery. His work is amazing and i tried to create a similar works, but still cant get the effect that he created. I didnt get to see Kusama's works which I really like but I did see her smaller sculptures at Mori Art Museum. It was okay but I like her bigger installation and performance works more, esp in the unusual concept that she demonstrates.
From China, Cai Guo-Qiang is definitely my fav. wanna know why ? google him and check out his beyond-comparison installation work.
From Germany, Thomas Ruff. His concept is similar to my intended concept if I were to do photography in the future. Just like Pierre et Giles, Isaac Julien and Wai Tek, he chooses so-called taboo subject but then transform them into objects that are lifted from their previous conception. Nudity, sex, homosexuality, apartheid, generalization upon many many issues, etc etc. There's also an artist from the States- I assumed - which I cant remember his name but he also does photography works which are wild yet colourful and absolutely high budget productions as he takes photos of famous stars and movie actors and actresses.
From the other part of the West ( as I do not know for sure where do they come from ), I like works of Cindy Sherman. Another photography works where i disliked at first but loving them now. Nothing else to say about her works but not because I have nothing to say, but there are endless things to see from her simple, yet deep storyboard-style photographs.
From Indo, i like this artist whom i cant remember his name but he creates paintings. Huge paintings where the objects, which are most of the time humans, being wrapped in newspapers. When I first saw his works at C-ART and VisualArt magazines, I never really like them but when I saw the actual painting at National Gallery of Jakarta, I was stunned. They were so detailed that you can actually read every single words on the newspaper. Imagine many many human forms being wrapped in newspaper yet you can still identify the news printed on them. It was amazing as the time and effort in creating one must be extremely excessive. I dont think I have the patience to do that ....
ok ... haha
